Southern Cross Ministries was established in 2002 by Jim and Becky Newman.  They, along with their two sons, started working in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia in 2003.  After going and relieving Dr. Delroy Brown and his wife for three months in 2001, Jim and Becky received an invitation from Delroy to join his wife and him in their work in Toowoomba.  Upon accepting the invitation to join their work, Jim and Becky started making plans.  Shortly after that decision, the Hillsboro Church of Christ began looking for a "living link" missionary to bring on staff.  The elders of the church, with support of the congregation, called Jim to the staff of the Hillsboro Church.  With Hillsboro on board in their support, along with several other congregations supporting the work, Jim and Becky started making their plans and left in December of 2003 to begin their work in Toowoomba.

The Newmans continued their work with the Browns in Toowoomba through the fall of 2007.  That work consisted of serving with the International Christian Church and with the International Bible Academy, along with other outreach programs that developed since the Newman's arrival.

In the fall of 2007 two other families joined Jim and Becky in a home Bible Study endeavoring to become the nucleus for a new church congregation.  This congregation was officially started in April 2008 as the Eastern Downs Church of Christ.  The new church has grown substantially, and is actively working to grow in spiritual maturity and evangelistic outreach.

Their new work is also emphasizing education and training of the believers.  Jim is presently organizing the Southern Cross Bible Institute.  This ministry will offer institute level academic courses to better equip the brethren to serve more effectively.

In August 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2009 Kerry and Mona Allen of Person to Person Ministries have traveled to Australia to assist Jim and Becky in their work.    Kerry has taught and preached each year in Toowoomba, as well as traveling to New South Wales teaching in several of the churches that have been open to New Testament Christianity.

Southern Cross Ministry desires for Kerry to continue working with them as long as time and resources permit it.   Person to Person hopes that this blessed opportunity to share the Word of God will continue.  If you would like to make a contribution toward these trips, please mail your gift to Person to Person Ministries and write "Australia Mission" on the memo line.
